What are Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones, also known as renal calculi, are hard masses of salts and minerals that accumulate in the kidneys, pelvic ureteric junction, bladder, etc. Kidney stones are usually made of calcium, oxalate, phosphate, cystine(rare), and xanthine (rare).

Kidney stones can be different sizes, from being very small to as big as a golf ball.

If you don't treat your kidney stones right away, it can cause pain in your stomach and make it hard for urine to flow through.

Kidney stones form when there is a lot of waste products in the urine. This happens because there is not enough fluid to dilute the urine.

Calcium stones, Struvite stones, Cystine stones and Uric acid stones.

Risks & Complications

One of the most common complications during kidney stone surgery can be an injury to the ureter. This can happen if a stent is inserted incorrectly. If this happens, the ureter may tear.

Kidney stones can be silent and painless. If left untreated, they may grow in size and increase the chances of complications.

If the pain is unbearable and you cannot find a comfortable position to rest, then you should consult a urologist. Sometimes pain can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills. If you see blood in your urine or experience extreme difficulty while passing the urine, then you must seek immediate medical assistance.
