All have to know about varicose veins

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins. Any vein that is close to the skin's surface (superficial) can become varicosed. Varicose veins most commonly affect the veins in the legs. That's because standing and walking increases the pressure in the veins of the lower body.

How does it form?

Varicose veins are caused by increased blood pressure in the veins. Varicose veins happen in the veins near the surface of the skin (superficial). The blood moves towards the heart by one-way valves in the veins. When the valves become weakened or damaged, blood can collect in the veins.

Types of varicose veins

  • - Saphenous varicose veins. Saphenous varicose veins involve the Saphenous veins in the legs, which swell significantly larger than their intended size and bulge out from the skin.
  • - Reticular varicose veins. Reticular varicose veins spread like a mesh and cover a wider area on the skin.
  • - Spider Veins.

Causes

Ø  Age

Ø  Pregnancy

Ø  Hereditary

Ø  Obesity

Ø  Hormonal changes

Symptoms

Varicose veins may not cause any pain. Signs you may have with varicose veins include:

  • - Veins that are dark purple or blue in color
  • - Veins that appear twisted and bulging; often like cords on your legs

When painful signs and symptoms occur, they may include:

  • - An achy or heavy feeling in your legs
  • - Burning, throbbing, muscle cramping and swelling in your lower legs
  • - Worsened pain after sitting or standing for a long time
  • - Itching around one or more of your veins
  • - Bleeding from varicose veins
  • - A painful cord in the vein with red discoloration of the skin
  • - Color changes, hardening of the vein, inflammation of the skin or skin ulcers near your ankle, which can mean you have a serious form of vascular disease that requires medical attention

Diagnosis

Tests:

To diagnose varicose veins, a health care provider might recommend a test called a venous Doppler ultrasound of the leg. A Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive test that uses sound waves to look at blood flow through the valves in the veins. A leg ultrasound can help detect a blood clot.

Self diagnosis:

  • - Leg pain, aching or cramping.
  • - Burning or itching of the skin.
  • - Leg or ankle swelling, especially at the end of the day.
  • - “Heavy” feeling in legs.
  • - Varicose veins.
  • - Skin discoloration or texture changes, such as above the ankle.
  • - Open wounds or sores, such as above the ankle.
  • Restless legs.

Risks and complications

During the surgery

Vein stripping and ligation is typically only performed for severe cases of varicose veins. The procedure involves tying shut and removing the veins through small cuts in your skin. You will be given medicine to temporarily put you to sleep so you don't feel any pain during the procedure.

If left untreated

Varicose veins can cause ulcers (open sores), bleeding and skin discoloration if left untreated. Severe varicose veins may be a sign of chronic venous insufficiency. This condition affects your veins' ability to pump blood to your heart. People who have varicose veins may be more likely to develop blood clots.

Prevention of varicose veins

Ø  Exercise regularly. Your leg muscles are your biggest allies.

Ø  Lose weight if you're overweight.

Ø  Avoid standing or sitting for a long time.

Ø  Don't wear tight-fitting clothes.

Ø  Be sure to put your feet up.

Ø  Wear support pantyhose.

Ø  Invest in a compression hose.

Treatment option & cost

Non-surgical treatment

  • - Sclerotherapy. The goal of Sclerotherapy is to destroy varicose veins by injecting them with a solution called a sclerosant.
  • - Radiofrequency ablation.
  • - Endogenous laser ablation.
  • - Phlebotomy.

Surgical treatment

Surgery if endothermic ablation treatments and Sclerotherapy are unsuitable for you, you'll usually be offered a surgical procedure called ligation and stripping to remove the affected veins. Varicose vein surgery is usually carried out under general anesthetic, which means you will be asleep during the procedure.

Surgical preparation

Your doctor may tell you to stop taking aspirin, no steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or blood thinners before your procedure. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. You will need to remove all clothing and jewelry in the area under examination. Plan to have someone drive you home after your procedure.

What to except during the surgery?

Your doctor makes a tiny cut in your skin near the varicose vein. He or she then inserts a small tube called a catheter into the vein. A device at the tip of the tube heats up the inside of the vein and closes it off. You will be awake during this procedure, but your doctor will numb the area around the vein.

After the surgery

You will be encouraged to walk right after the procedure, for about 30 to 60 minutes. Your leg may have some bruising. The bruises should go away in about 2 weeks.
