A cataract is a clouding of the lens in your eye. This can happen for many reasons, but the most common one is long-term exposure to UV light. Cataracts can also happen because of age or diseases like diabetes.
Cataracts are often caused by the denaturation of lens proteins. This can be due to a number of genetic factors, or simply advancing age. As people get older, the prevalence of cataracts becomes more common. Most people will develop a cataract if they are over 70 years old.
Cataracts can sometimes happen after a physical injury to your eye. A recent study found that pilots with commercial airlines are three times as likely to get cataracts as people who don't fly. Taking care of our eyes is really important. We can do this by wearing sunglasses when we're outside and when it's windy. Sunlight and wind can be bad for our eyes, so we should protect them.
